Visiting Dog Passion Sri Lanka: A Heartwarming Encounter with Bentota’s Stray Dogs

If you’re traveling through the southern coast of Sri Lanka and looking for something meaningful beyond the beaches, a visit to Dog Passion Sri Lanka’s dog orphanage in Bentota is an unforgettable experience. In early September, we dropped by to the Dog Orphanage, with houses over 100 rescued, street dogs – a mix of playful puppies, shy adolescents, and gentle seniors – each with a story of resilience.

First Impressions: A Warm Welcome by Wagging Tails

We came across Dog Passion Orphanage by chance, when we were taking a walk on the sand bank near the Bentota Beach. We peaked over the wall and the dogs barked at us - defending their territory. After a few minutes of Google, we found the number of the dog orphanage and decided to visit the following day with a little treat for our furry friends; a delicious bag of Pedigree Biscuits.

As soon as we stepped inside the shelter we were greeted by a wave of wagging tails and curious eyes. Some dogs rushed toward us, eager for attention and affection, licking our fingers and letting us pat their heads, while others stood back cautiously, watching with quiet curiosity. One little fluffy fellow - who sadly had no legs due to an accident - howled at us from under the shade of a large tree. All of the dogs were plump, healthy, and most importantly - happy.

We met two of the caregivers, who were at the shelter: a kind woman who welcomed us warmly and a man from the local community who helps care for the dogs daily. Together, they feed, clean, and comfort the animals with remarkable devotion.

Daily Care: Feeding and Medical Support

Caring for over a hundred dogs is no small task. Each day, the team prepares around 10 kilograms of rice mixed with meat, served twice daily. In the evenings, the dogs are treated to Pedigree biscuits, a highlight of their day. A veterinarian visits regularly to provide medical care, ensuring even the dogs with injuries or special needs receive treatment.

We noticed some dogs with visible scars or health challenges, but their resilience was striking – many still ran up to us, full of joy, eager for a scratch behind the ears.

The Dogs’ Personalities: From Playful to Shy

One of the most touching aspects of our visit was seeing the range of personalities.

  • The social butterflies: Dogs that gathered around immediately, tails wagging, competing for cuddles.

  • The shy ones: A few lingered in the background, cautious but curious. With time and gentle patience, even they edged closer.

  • The seniors: Calm, wise-looking dogs who seemed content just to rest in the shade, watching over the younger pack.

Every dog carried a unique charm – and together, they showed a huge amount resilience.
